LEATHERART
by dawn mountain

Welcome to Dawn Mountain LeatherArt!

Every original Leatherart piece is designed and created by me. That's me sitting at my Pfaff industrial sewing machine in the inset at right. I began using leather as an art medium in 1978, putting designs on leather clothing and handbags. Something about the feel, smell, and durability of leather has always attracted me. Customers over the years have continued to tell me how much they enjoy their LeatherArt. I am thankful that they keep me in business doing what I love for so many years.

Starting with a pencil and paper I draw the design and make a paper pattern. The pattern pieces are chalked on to various types of leather and then cut individually using specialized scissors. Next, I arrange the pieces on a leather background and then glue them in place with the same rubber cement used by top shoemakers. Now it's time to stitch them to the background. Much of the stitching is for decoration and is part of the design. I use a polyester twist thread that either matches or contrasts the color of the leathers. Once stitched, I might further embellish the piece with metal or gemstones. Now my leather picture is ready to be mounted around steel ring or attached to a wood backing and framed.
